We need a dynamic, successful Project Manager to join SMADE. You will be part of an amazing team 🤩 and you will be responsible for the mechanical design & development of our connected smart devices. We are looking for candidates who thrive in a fast-paced start-up like environment and want to invent the future. In the role, you will identify and initiate investigations of production technologies, prototype and test solutions for product features, and design and validate production designs that deliver an exceptional user experience.

 

You will work autonomously under the responsibility of the R&D Lead with a mechanical background and work with the team at large to ensure a functional and aesthetic product. To be successful you need to be highly motivated, understand how to solve problems and dive deep while delivering to the highest standards. Your mission, should you choose to accept it...

Project Management aspects:
  • Identify the customer values and expectations for a device and translate them into mechanical requirements.
  • Define and iterate functional dimensions of mechanical enclosures for electronic boards in accordance with electronic HW engineers requirements (overall PCB dimensions, batteries and antenna locations, …).
  • Design the enclosures using CAD software (Solidworks), to ensure system functionality, minimal footprint, prevention from moisture ingression, longlife mechanical strength and user friendly and secure attachment.
  • Choose and validate materials and assembly processes in compliance with medical device requirements.
  • Lead prototyping effort and research of suppliers for manufacturing and secondary operations.
  • Perform Design Failure Modes Analysis and define Risk Mitigation and Test Plan matrix.
  • Accountable for planning, reporting and achievement of verification and validation on mechanical aspects. As such, autonomy and proactivity in defining tasks and ensuring completion, including out of office visits to suppliers, partners and manufacturing/prototyping facilities, are expected.
  • Critical thinking, especially for problem solving and design improvement/optimisation (design for cost).
  • Produced documentation from Design Inputs to Validation documents must be compliant with medical devices requirements.

Design aspects:
  • Create electronic enclosures designs that are functional, manufacturable and with an appealing look using 3D CAD software.
  • Define form factor, mounting methods, major component placement, connector placement and mounting, RF shielding design, and thermal transfer paths for sealed enclosures.
  • Perform engineering analyses on parts and assemblies, including DFM, FEA, fatigue, FMEA, root cause analysis, DOE creation.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation (2D drawings, design notes, assembly methods, test specifications, regulatory documentation).
  • Create, execute, and document prototype test plans to assure product quality and confirm fabrication, assembly, and installation techniques.
  • Work with suppliers to transfer designs from prototype to mass production.
  • Provide hands-on support to production, manufacturing, and test teams.
  • Assess technical risk and cost for new products, review product requirements, and transform into functional and ergonomic designs.
  • Work with component and material vendors to specify requirements to design-in and deliver to mass production.
  • Deliver full documentation for new product development with focus on design for assembly and design for manufacturing.
  • Consider current and future design platforms during the development process to ensure consistency and forward compatibility.
  • Provide operations support including cost analysis, generation of Bills of Material, creation of Engineering Change Notices, and general technical support.
  • Research into materials and processes technologies to scope development opportunities.

👩🏽💻For our teammates, the ideal colleague is …

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 5/7 years of experience required, product development of consumer electronics.
  • Strong 3D CAD skills (Solidworks, ProE or similar), including Surface Modeling.
  • Proficiency in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerance analysis for drawings.
  • Broad knowledge of plastic part design, fabrication processes (such as High-Pressure Injection Molding & Tooling, 3D printing, ...) and assembly processes (such as welding).
  • Demonstrated design experience integrating electronic component modules (Sensors, Batteries, PCBs, etc.).
  • Demonstrated design experience with high volume/high finish electronics enclosure materials.

  • Practical knowledge of how to quickly prototype and test designs.
  • Ability to contribute during all phases of the project from initial concept to production ramp, including manufacturing transfer.
  • Experience in Design for Manufacturability (DFM), and Design for Assembly (DFA).
  • Critical thinking, especially for problem solving and design improvement/optimisation (design for cost).
  • The plus: Product validation experience (Shock/Drop, Cycle Testing, Environmental Testing).
